The Emerging Field of 3D Trial Graphics in Litigation Support

If a picture really is worth a thousand words, then the emerging field of 3D rendering and visualization should leave you speechless. Oftentimes, words alone cannot fully convey the facts of your case and have the lasting emotional impact you need.

3D Litigation Support and Trial Graphics

While traditional 2D exhibit boards help reinforce the factual information, they do not always demonstrate the importance of event timelines, physical injury or emotional impact. Given the length of the typical court case, too much emphasis is often placed on overloaded exhibit boards, burdening the jury with information lacking continuity or impact.

3D Trial and law demonstratives

Compounding the problem is a more advanced jury pool where information is instantly available. All types of information can be gathered quickly and interactively. No longer do they solely rely on print media for their information; instead, they use the internet to seek out multiple types of information and sources quickly. This information is then synthesized to form their independent opinions. Consideration must be given to how fundamentally different information is consumed by today’s “Instant Everything Generation.” Today’s presentations need to be multifaceted and encompass multiple types of media to create a lasting retention and impact on the jury.

3D Accident Reconstruction Animation

Traditional techniques such as two-dimensional exhibit boards full of charts and graphs or Power-Point based presentations are quickly becoming obsolete methods of courtroom presentations. If jury pools are becoming more advanced in how they interpret information, then the way cases are presented must also be fundamentally changed. Lawyers and litigators are turning to new mediums and new types of litigation support companies to help assist in trial graphics and litigation support.

3D Simulation Of A Motor Vehicle Accident

Moh.Visuals, Inc. is one of these new and emerging 3D Visualization companies. They are using cutting edge mediums to assist legal practices in their courtroom presentations. In one particular case, a full 3D environment was modeled in the computer. Once this process was done, a simulation of the car crash was created from official data and photographic references. The next step was to create cameras at all logical viewpoints, including in car and opposing car angles. The last step in the process was to record the various angles and output them to various digital formats. Multiple static 3D rendering was also created and mounted on boards to supplement the main movie, creating a multifaceted presentation.

Although the presentation was challenged for admissibility, the tangibility of the 3D visualization really did leave them speechless. The imagery not only was worth a thousand words, it saved them time, money and the emotional stress associated with a lengthy trial. The case was mediated and awarded without ever going to trial.

3D Product Rendering For Anheuser-Busch The above 3D product rendering was created for the Marketing and Advertising at Anheuser-Busch . We created a series of 3D Concept renderings based on the popular hand held games by Hasbro. The premise behind the Bud Light Games was to create a fun interactive bar experience while also advertising and Marketing Bud Light. Several additional 3D concepts and variations were visualized quickly and put together in an animation. 3D Product Comp For Bud Light Although everything was created in 3D, the overall presentation proved to be a great tool helping the Advertising and Marketing Department convey the idea clearly.

St. Louis, MO, 6/4/08 – St. Louis based Moh.Visuals, Inc. creates stunning 3D visualization renderings depicting Hyperion Resources’ new South Dakota refinery site. The new refinery will be the first oil refinery built in the United States in over 30 years.

Hyperion Oil Rendering

Hyperion Resources, Inc., a privately held Dallas oil exploration and production company, contracted Moh.Visuals, Inc. to create realistic 3D renderings of their proposed Union County, South Dakota Elk Point site. Using proprietary cutting edge techniques, Moh.Visuals was able to take the available CAD drawings, satellite imagery and ground base photography, as well as land mass data, to create stunningly accurate 3D representation of the refinery and the surrounding topology. The site was then digitally photographed from various angles to help answer site line questions and concerns for the neighboring community before any construction was started.

On June 04, 2008, Union County approved a request to rezone 3,292 acres of farmland for a new classification, Energy Center Planned Development, by a solid 58 percent to 42 percent margin by county voters. An average of 4,500 construction jobs would be required over four years. With the refinery up and running, Hyperion pledges to create 1,826 full-time jobs at hourly wages of between $20 and $30. Hyperion touted the so-called “green” technology in its proposed energy center, which it claims would be the world’s cleanest. The refinery would process 400,000 barrels of tar sands crude from Alberta into low-sulfur gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

Down On The Farm

3D Rendering of a horse

Recently we have been putting the finishing touches on a 3D equine digestion animation project for Purina Farms website. The site is called Omolene University. As things generally go they needed it yesterday. With 3D animation we usually require more time to compensate for changes and time to render the frames of animation over.

Typically, it requires two minutes per frame and if you multiply that by thirty frames a second you end up with something in the neighborhood of two hours for every second of animation. You see a problem developing here right? Now, if the animation is five minutes long and the client needs it tomorrow, you better have the horsepower to do it….no pun intended, or your ass is fired. Pun intended!

The amazing thing is we no longer have to worry about this situation. We’ve been through this one a few times. It’s hard to believe, but with a broadband connection, an ftp client and a credit card number we can access a renderfarm of over 800 computers 24/7. In fact, I am monitoring it as I write this from the comfort of my easy chair at home.
